Halo: Infinite Is Confirmed to Be Halo 6
It has been confirmed that Halo: Infinite will be Halo 6 in the sense that it will be continuing the narrative of Halo 5: Guardians. This is relevant because some fans were confused by the name, which is understandable because there are some Halo spin-offs that have received similar-sounding names.
Why Isn’t Microsoft Calling Halo: Infinite Halo 6?
As for why Halo: Infinite isn’t being called Halo 6 instead, well, it is important to note that Bonnie Ross, the head of 343 Industries, has wanted to stop using numbers for main Halo games for some time. In fact, she has outright stated that she would have preferred it if Halo 4 wasn’t named Halo 4 but rather something else altogether.
Ross’s position on the matter has no connection to the story of the main Halo games whatsoever. Instead, it is based on purely practical reasons. In short, numbers are a simple and straightforward method for distinguishing one game from another when a series hasn’t been in existence for that long, but becomes much less so when a series has been running for decades and decades. This is the reason that Super Mario Odyssey is Super Mario Odyssey rather than Mario 200 or so. Likewise, something like Halo 12 would be both clunky and unmemorable, meaning that the change from numbers to some other system has to happen sooner or later.
What Do We Know about Halo: Infinite?
Regardless, it might be more worthwhile to pay attention to what we know about the upcoming Halo: Infinite. For instance, it has been revealed that the upcoming Halo game will be continuing the story of Master Chief after the events of Halo 5: Guardians. Furthermore, trailer footage has shown Master Chief inserting what looks like a SD card into the back of his helmet, which suggests an AI though there is no indication whatsoever who this AI might be. Game-wise, it is interesting to note that Halo: Infinite will be made using a custom-built game engine, which will be paired with a new visual style as well as a wide range of environments. There have been some rumors that the game might be released on an episodic basis, but so far, those remain nothing but rumors.
