What Was Spelunky?
Spelunky was an indie platformer created by Derek Yu that managed to make a positive impression on a lot of people out there. For proof, look no further than the fact that it came out for the PC in 2008 before receiving a remake that was ported over to the Xbox 360, the PS3, the PS Vita, and then to the PC once more. Like its name suggests, Spelunky features an unnamed protagonist called the spelunker, who searches through underground tunnels for treasure. To do so, said individual must overcome both traps and enemies. However, spelunkers can overcome the obstacles in their way with bombs, rope, and other tools.
What Do We Know About Spelunky 2?
Spelunky 2 is the upcoming follow-up to Spelunky. Its existence has been known for some time, but it has popped up in the news once more because it has received a recent showcase. Something that should come as welcome news to those who remember its predecessor with fondness.
For the most part, Spelunky 2 seems to be retaining the core elements that made its predecessor a hit. For example, the player will still be overcoming both traps and enemies for the purpose of finding as much loot as possible. However, it is clear that there will be a lot of new additions, with examples ranging from new biomes and new obstacles to new characters, meaning that Spelunky 2 should offer plenty even for Spelunky fans.
Amusingly, it is interesting to note that Spelunky 2 will have a new protagonist. People who played through Spelunky will be familiar with the spelunker, though it was possible to unlock the damsel in distress as a playable character as well. Regardless, it turns out that the spelunker retired from spelunking to find love, with the result that Spelunky 2 will be headed up by his daughter Ana Spelunky. Of course, there will be more characters available in the upcoming game’s multiplayer mode to provide plenty of variety, with examples ranging from a pirate named Margaret Tunnel to a sloth named Roffy D. Sloth.
