Special Sparring CPU team sub costumes
In addition to their main, customized costume, each member of the CPU teams in the Special Sparring mode also has a sub costume–a variant of their main costume. To fight them in their sub costumes, select your own character’s sub costume (hold Start) on the character select screen after picking the Special Sparring team to face.
This works even if you’re using a custom costume with your character: hold Start, press Square to bring up the custom costume menu, and pick your desired custom costume; you can then release Start.
