Them’s Fightin’ Herds Cheats and Tips
Choosing a Character in Them’s Fightin’ Herds
As a new player begins to dive into the systems, structure, and overall feeling of Them’s Fightin’ Herds players will need to choose a character to dedicate their attention to. Although that is not to say a player is simply limited to playing one character, it is important and healthy for a new player to try out the cast and see who they enjoy. But it is just as important to master and stick to one “main” character that way you can become familiar with that character and the overarching systems as a whole. However, it is important to understand all the character’s archetypes and general gameplan before committing to that character.
Arizona: The poster child of the game. Arizona provides players a well rounded, rush-down, hyper-aggressive, and pseudo-grappler style of character. Arizona has a variety of powerful tools in her arsenal to allow her to slowly smother her opponent and make them crack under her pressure. Her lasso move provides a useful combo ender and some more technical resets to develop some pretty complicated mixups. At the base level, she is a simple and effective character for players new to the game, but as players develop and become more skilled she has a potentially high skill ceiling.
Paprika: a simple character, Paprika relies on her large normal attacks to slowly whittle away at her enemy’s health bar. She has a variety of powerful pressure tools that when she gets close to you, is nearly impossible to stop.
Oleander: another simple character, Oleander provides a very “Ryu” style of play. That is to say, she has a well-rounded versatile toolkit that allows her to do everything well, just not great. She has a puppet-style gimmick that she can utilize to unleash some devastating offense.
Pom: Pom controls a variety of different dogs that she can control and utilize to keep her opponent away from her. She is arguably the most technical character in the game, due to her heavy emphasis on being a puppet character. Players looking to utilize this character will need to dedicate a large chunk of time to grow familiar with her gameplay style.
Tianho: With a breadth of air mobility options, Tianho operates as an agile rush down character. With a variety of powerful mix-up tools, once she is one you, Tianho can suffocate you and force you to crack under her offense.
Velvet: This character provides a trap and keep-out character who excels at long-distance fighting. Velvet is perfect for players who wish to frustrate their opponents with superior reach and power.
Learn Every Character’s Tools in Them’s Fightin’ Herds
Part of what makes Them’s Fightin’ Herds such an accessible title is due to the minuscule roster in comparison to other major fighting games on the market. However, each of these characters is armed to the teeth with powerful moves, mix-ups, and overall breadth of devastating tools. So to succeed in Them’s Fightin’ Herds will require players to learn how to fight every character. The question then arises, what should I learn about these characters?
The first thing a new player should learn about a character is, what are their primary and most abusable moves. After determining what these moves are players need to learn how to combat them. If the move is extremely unsafe learn how to punish players for using that move. If it leaves them in an advantageous position then avoid trying to counter-attack, and wait for the prime opportunity to retaliate. Simply put, to defeat a character you need to learn what their weaknesses are, and by practicing how to stop their best moves, you will be one step to learning their weakness.
As you approach a particular matchup, learning what a particular character’s primary objective against your main is can help you formulate a winning strategy. In Arizona versus Velvet matchup learning that Velvet wants to keep you as far away as possible will help you place heavy emphasis on suffocating her when you are close. Succeeding in a title such as this is rooted deeply in a player’s understanding of the game’s extraordinarily small roster.
